Build Transmission Along Highways
Advocacy Action Plan
We can unblock thousands of clean energy projects by expanding the U.S. power grid. Tell state leaders to take no-brainer action by building transmission lines along existing highways.

Contact your State Legislator about leading on transmission
-
The barriers to building transmission lines along highways fall into one of two big buckets: legal (i.e. it’s not allowed) or cultural (i.e. there’s no process to get it done). In both cases, a clear directive from the state legislature is the most effective remedy. Ask your state legislators to support legislation that encourages building transmission lines along highways.
Contact your governor about getting state agencies to act
-
Since governors are responsible for highway and power grid infrastructure, they have the birds-eye view to see that siting transmission lines along highways is a win-win. They can instruct the Department of Transportation (DOT) to create an official process for transmission projects to get sited, permitted, and built along highways.
Contact your PUC, who typically approves transmission lines
-
The route for a new transmission line is usually first proposed by the utility company or transmission developer who will own the project. Public Utility Commissions (PUCs) are tasked with approving or rejecting the route. PUCs can publish guidance that encourages developers to pick routes at highways.
