Set State Standards for Solar

Advocacy Action Plan

Solar energy is popular—let’s make it easier to build.
States can help by setting minimum standards for solar development, giving local governments clear guidance for siting decisions that are often confusing or out of step with public support.

  • Contact your State Legislator about leading on solar

    <Dropdown> Why?

The barriers to building transmission lines along highways fall into one of two big buckets: legal (i.e. it’s not allowed) or cultural (i.e. there’s no process to get it done). In both cases, a clear directive from the state legislature is the most effective remedy. Ask your state legislators to support legislation that encourages building transmission lines along highways.

Write an LTE to educate the public and reach your elected officials via their media mentions.

    <Dropdown> Why?

Since governors are responsible for highway and power grid infrastructure, they have the birds-eye view to see that siting transmission lines along highways is a win-win. They can instruct the Department of Transportation (DOT) to create an official process for transmission projects to get sited, permitted, and built along highways.

Amplify this Climate Solution among your own network to increase public support.

    <Dropdown> Why?

The route for a new transmission line is usually first proposed by the utility company or transmission developer who will own the project. Public Utility Commissions (PUCs) are tasked with approving or rejecting the route. PUCs can publish guidance that encourages developers to pick routes along highways.

#4 Contact your governor about setting state standards for solar.
